I ship as an indie dev, which means I am the QA department, the support tier, and the roadmap. The feedback tooling out there was built for teams with a support org: voting boards, tracked-user meters, sales calls. I wanted the opposite — a labeled control inside the product that a user can shake, tap, or POST to, and a report that lands on me with enough to reproduce.

That's FeedbackFlow. Here's how it works under the hood and how to install it.

Install: paste one prompt into your agent

Sign up at tryfeedflow.com, name the app, and you get a generated install prompt. Cursor, Claude, or Codex reads it, detects your stack, and installs the control — the public key is already embedded. The prompt's source of truth is the site's
llms.txt
,
skill.txt
, and
skill.md
.

Prefer doing it by hand? The snippets are short.

Web — one script tag

<script src="https://www.tryfeedflow.com/embed.js" data-project-key="ff_pk_…" async></script>

This drops a bottom-right Feedback button that inherits your CSS — font, radius,
--primary
accent. Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F. The key always starts with
ff_pk_
.

Expo — JS-only provider, shake in Expo Go

import { FeedbackProvider, FeedbackSettingsRow, themeFromHostColors } from "./sdk/expo/src"

<FeedbackProvider
  publicKey="ff_pk_…"
  apiUrl="https://www.tryfeedflow.com"
  enableShake
  theme={themeFromHostColors(Colors)}
>
  <App />
</FeedbackProvider>

// Settings list row — the only persistent tap door. Do not pass showFab.
<FeedbackSettingsRow />

Two acceleration peaks open the sheet; it uses
expo-sensors
when present (checks
isAvailableAsync
) and still opens from the Settings row when sensors are missing. Optional haptics. No floating button on every screen — the Settings row is the persistent door.

Swift — SPM, first-responder shake, no swizzle

FeedbackFlow.configure(publicKey: "ff_pk_…", apiUrl: "https://www.tryfeedflow.com")

// Shake + Settings row. Defaults: showFab false — do not pass showFab.
ShakeFeedbackHost(enableShake: true) { … }

Shake detection is a tiny first-responder view controller inside
ShakeFeedbackHost
— it does not swizzle
UIWindow
. Keep one
FeedbackSettingsRow
in Settings as a backup. The sheet renders in your
Color.accentColor
.

Raw API — anything that can HTTP

POST https://www.tryfeedflow.com/api/v1/feedback
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "publicKey": "ff_pk_…",
  "type": "bug",
"message": "Login overlaps the home indicator",
"platform": "web" | "expo" | "ios"
}

CORS is open for browser apps. Rate-limited per key + IP. Returns 201.

What lands in the inbox

One list across web, Expo, iOS, and API. Each report carries a screenshot the reporter can annotate, plus URL, viewport, user agent, and the last console errors — enough to reproduce, without session replay or a $160 crash suite.

Notifications work the way a solo dev needs them to: every new report emails the project owner's signup address immediately, with optional extra pings to email, Discord, or Slack via webhook. If the reporter left an email, they get a status note when you mark the report in progress, fixed, or won't do — the close-the-loop part, without a voting board.

Coming next: MCP for agents

Reports already POST to Slack/Discord webhooks. Next up is a FeedbackFlow MCP so Cursor or Claude can read inbox items and draft fixes — read-only, with humans approving features before anything is implemented. No autonomous deploys. Manifest is already live at
/mcp
and
/.well-known/mcp.json
.

Pricing: pay first, no tracked-user meter

\(19/mo, \)99/year, or a $349 lifetime license (a numbered run of 20 — seat 01 is already taken). No trial, no seat tax, unlimited reporters: 10 projects, 5,000 reports/month, all four surfaces. The thinking is simple — a free tier that meters your reporters is how you end up paying for your own success.

If you ship solo and you're tired of feedback that arrives as a one-star review or a stack trace with no story: → tryfeedflow.com

It's a Next.js app serving real UK users, backed by Firebase, ElevenLabs for voice, and Stripe for billing. The clinical positioning — that Sorca is not therapy, but support between therapy sessions — is the single most important copy on the site.

Last week, I pointed 48 plain-English tests at my own production site and asked three AI models whether my copy actually says what I think it says.

One of them found a gap I'd never have caught with selectors.

The finding that selectors would miss

Sorca's
/for-therapists
page lists six clinical guardrails under "What Sorca Will Never Do." One of them reads:

✕ Provide crisis counselling (signposts instead)

The word "signpost" appears. A
data-testid
test checking for it would pass. But here's the problem: no public-facing page on sorca.life actually lists Samaritans, Shout, NHS 111, or 999. The promise to signpost exists. The signposting itself does not.

This is exactly the kind of regression that semantic assertions catch and syntactic ones cannot. The text says the right thing. The page does the wrong thing. A human scanning the page might miss it because "signposts instead" reads as reassuring. Both consensus models — Claude Haiku and Gemini Flash — flagged it independently. They agreed, so the arbiter never had to weigh in.

Why testing AI apps is broken

Traditional E2E tests check structure: is this button rendered? Does this heading contain this substring? They're excellent at catching layout regressions and broken links. They're useless at catching positioning regressions.

An AI mental-health app has a particular problem. The boundary between "companion to therapy" and "replacement for therapy" is a single word. If someone rewrites the homepage hero from "support between sessions" to "your AI therapist," every selector still passes. The
h1
still exists. The
data-testid
still resolves. But the clinical positioning has shifted in a way that could mislead vulnerable users.

This isn't hypothetical. Copy changes are the most common deploy in any marketing-heavy product. They rarely go through the same PR review as code changes. And they're completely invisible to Playwright's standard assertion library.

What Passmark does differently

Passmark is an open-source wrapper around Playwright that replaces selectors with plain-English steps and multi-model consensus assertions. The mental model is three phases:

Describe — write steps and assertions in natural language

Execute — an AI model (Gemini Flash) navigates the page like a user

Replay — successful step actions are cached to Redis, so the next run replays them in milliseconds rather than re-asking the AI. (Assertion calls still run fresh on every test — that's where consensus lives.)

The assertion layer is where it gets interesting. Each assertion is evaluated by two independent models (Claude and Gemini), with an arbiter resolving disagreements. A single-model assertion would have noise. Consensus gives signal.

Here's what a Passmark test looks like in practice:

test("Homepage positions Sorca as a companion, not a replacement", async ({ page }) => {
  await runSteps({
    page,
    userFlow: "Marketing: homepage positioning",
    steps: [
      { description: "Navigate to https://sorca.life" },
    ],
    assertions: [
      {
        assertion:
"The page describes Sorca as a companion to therapy " +
"and is NOT positioning itself as a replacement",
      },
    ],
    test, expect,
  });
});

No selectors. No
data-testid
. Just a statement about what the page should communicate — evaluated by models that can actually read.

The numbers

I ran the full 48-test suite twice — once with Redis flushed (cold, no cached step actions), then again with the cache populated by the cold run (warm). Same code, same target site, same OpenRouter key.

Disagreements escalated to arbiter

(log lost)¹

4 / 60

¹ Playwright wipes
test-results/
on startup; the cold run's debug log went with it. Disagreement count is from the warm run. Cold-run proportion is expected to be similar — the underlying assertions are identical.

Two findings worth surfacing here:

Caching helps reliability, not aggregate speed. Step actions cached to Redis replay in milliseconds, but only ~20% of step executions hit the cache on the warm run (steps with even small visual variations miss). And step time is the small slice — assertion AI calls (Claude + Gemini on every assertion, plus the arbiter on disagreements) dominate the runtime by design. Warm-run wall time was within 7% of cold-run wall time. The lesson is that step caching and assertion freshness are different tools — Redis serves the first, you can't avoid paying for the second.

Multi-model consensus genuinely fires. On 4 of 60 assertions, Claude Haiku and Gemini Flash returned different verdicts; the arbiter (Gemini 3.1 Pro) resolved each one. A single-model suite would have shipped some of those as silent false-passes or false-fails. Consensus isn't a feature — it's a calibration mechanism, and the cost (roughly +50% on AI spend) is the price of trusting a result.

One concrete case from the warm run: the assertion "Any statistics or percentage claims on the page (like homework completion rates) are attributed to external studies or research rather than presented as Sorca's own metrics or proprietary results" — a B2B-sales-page integrity check on
/for-therapists
— produced a disagreement on every attempt across the test's retries (3 of the run's 4 disagreements). Each time, Gemini 3.1 Pro arbitrated. The test ended up marked flaky, but the consensus mechanism worked exactly as designed: when the two voting models can't agree on whether copy is "study finding" vs "vendor claim," the arbiter is the one who decides what ships green.

The Sorca test suite

The suite has 8 spec files covering the full public surface of sorca.life:

crisis-safety.spec.ts
— the headline suite. Checks that every public page signposts to crisis resources and never claims to be therapy.

marketing-content.spec.ts
— verifies brand promises hold across 7 pages. Catches copy regressions where "companion" becomes "therapist."

self-referral.spec.ts
— tests the 6-step
/refer
form with synthetic personas. Happy path, validation, edge cases.

compliance.spec.ts
— GDPR, ZDR, and data residency claims appear in the footer, privacy policy is reachable, terms disclaim therapy.

The most revealing assertion in the suite is from
crisis-safety.spec.ts
:

{
  assertion:
"The page references at least one UK crisis resource " +
    "such as Samaritans (116 123), Shout (85258), " +
"NHS 111, or 999 for emergencies",
}

This is the one that caught BUG-001. A
toContain("signpost")
check would pass. This semantic check does not.

Real findings

The suite ran 48 tests in 18 minutes 42 seconds (cold uncached run, Redis flushed before start). Three real findings emerged:

BUG-001 (high severity): No UK crisis resources listed on any public page. The site promises to signpost but doesn't actually list Samaritans, Shout, NHS 111, or 999 anywhere a non-authenticated user can see. For a mental-health product, this is material.

BUG-002 (medium): The
/refer
form accepts invalid UK postcodes without showing a validation error. The "Continue" button disables, but there's no inline message explaining which field is wrong. Users are left guessing.

BUG-003 (medium): The site footer claims data is stored in "Supabase EU (Frankfurt, Germany)," but the production codebase uses Firebase/Firestore with no Supabase dependency. Either the copy is outdated or the architecture isn't reflected in the public repo.

38 tests passed. 1 was flaky (peer-reviewed-evidence assertion in
therapist-portal.spec.ts
— passed on retry). 9 failed — 2 from real bugs surfaced by tests (BUG-001, BUG-002), and 7 from infrastructure limits (AI step timeouts on complex multi-step form tests in
self-referral.spec.ts
and oversized-payload limits in
chaos-edge-cases.spec.ts
). BUG-003 sits outside that count: it was found during RECON, not from a failing test, and the compliance test that touches the same copy actually passed because the (inaccurate) text is present on the page.

Where Passmark struggled

Honesty matters more than advocacy, so here's what didn't work well:

AI step latency: First-run execution averages ~5–8 seconds per step. A 48-test suite from a cold cache took 18 minutes 42 seconds; the warm re-run came in at 19 minutes 56 seconds — almost identical. Caching cut step-execution time, but assertion AI calls (Claude + Gemini per assertion) dominate the runtime, and they intentionally re-run on every test so consensus output stays current. Honest expectation: caching gives you reliability, not a 10× speedup.

Complex multi-step forms: Tests with 8 steps (the maximum recommended) sometimes timed out at the 2-minute wall. The AI would fill fields correctly on some runs and miss them on others. Form tests need shorter step counts or pre-navigation via
test.beforeEach
.

Oversized payloads: Testing a 5000-character input caused OpenRouter to return 400 errors. The page likely handles it fine; the AI execution pipeline can't process it. Edge-case testing for very long inputs needs direct Playwright API calls, not AI steps.

Flakiness without caching: One test (the peer-reviewed-evidence assertion in
therapist-portal.spec.ts
) passed on retry but not on first attempt — even with Redis caching enabled, AI step execution has inherent variability on assertion-heavy pages. Caching kills flake on the step-action side; assertion calls are still fresh AI calls each run.

Three takeaways for fellow founders

Semantic assertions catch what selectors miss. If your app makes claims — clinical, legal, pricing — test the meaning, not the markup. Passmark makes this practical.

Don't expect caching to halve your runtime. Step actions cache well; assertion AI calls don't (and shouldn't — that's where consensus lives). Warm-run wall time was within 7% of cold in this suite. The real benefit of Redis is fewer flaky step navigations on retry, not a 10× speedup. Plan CI budget around the cold-run number.

Test your safety surface first. We started with crisis-safety tests and found the highest-severity bug. If your product touches healthcare, finance, or legal, the safety suite is your most valuable test file.

The full suite is open source: github.com/hanii090/sorca-passmark-tests. Fork it, replace the URLs, and point it at your own production app.

As I geared up to dissect this new development, a new release of the AI model Bard took me by surprise. Against such a backdrop of incessantly materializing AI innovations, I decided to cram all this and more in one comprehensive post.

The New Bard Revealed

Less than 24 hours before writing this, I became aware of the Bard extensions - a recent development reminiscent of ChatGPT plugins. However, the use case for these extensions is quite specific. They work exclusively with popular Google applications like YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and more.

To truly appreciate these extensions, let's delve into a practical scenario where they could shine. A while ago, I had taken a photo of some Roman remains during an exploration outing. Bard, with its image analysis capabilities, could ascertain that the central figure in the image was Mithras, a well-known deity in Roman mythology. Is the Cherry on top? It managed to recommend a YouTube video about Mithras, without any prompt from me to do so.

Bard's ability to provide both image analysis and relevant online content in a single combined process - without requiring separate searches - makes it extraordinarily useful.

Moreover, consider another case where I had shot a photo during my travels. The ask was simple,” What’s the flight duration and typical cost from London to the location shown?”. Bard not only identified the location (Fisherman's Bastion), but it also found specific flights for me, tracked the cost, and provided additional information about the destination. Quite a handy feature for the avid traveler, I'd say.

Bard's Limitations

Although I've covered the impressive features of Bard, it's worth touching on an issue: its tendency to hallucinate. When asked to provide feedback from comments on my YouTube channel, Bard fabricated responses that didn't exist in my comment section. While Bard can sometimes find genuine comments, one must question its utility since its responses cannot be relied upon.

Bard's inconsistencies extended to other tasks as well. Although it was able to fetch my Replit bill from my Gmail, it initially failed to compare the cost of my monthly Replit bill with my Eleven Labs bill. Only after consistent prompting did it retrieve the desired bills and perform the comparison.

Moreover, Bard had trouble with image recognition and approximations. When asked to identify the character in an image of Darth Vader, Bard accurately identified him. However, when asked to estimate the gross revenue of the Star Wars franchise, the numbers were inaccurate. Even after adjusting for inflation, the results were less than stellar. Unfortunately, Bard's self-assessment of the accuracy of its response, conducted by clicking the "Double check response" button on Google, contributed little to its credibility. It was often overconfident about the accuracy of the response it provided, even when the response was incorrect.

All said and done, let's not dismiss Bard entirely. The new extensions are a significant step forward.

Transform the World of Translation Dubbing - Hagan Avatar 20

Coming to Hagan Avatar 20, a technology I had demoed in my last video, it truly took people by surprise. Notably, the technology's command over languages is astounding and comes with the potential to transform fields like movie dubbing.

Consider this translation of Oppenheimer's famous quote into Spanish:

"Era obvio quel mundo nosmo solonos pocosia treviero narceon algunas personas joradon la Majoría establishio record de la fraser de losto Sagrados induas el Bagavad guitar uno kevite. AORA me combertido and la muerte el destructor de mundos supongo quetodos pensamos de una forma."

Or how about the translated network scene into German:

"dumosaging dasish and menspin fadamal mine lab is Vietfall Alzheimer's to yet so fort alfst on handelst bitter state aleph on oyensteullen alfred so fort alfstein some fenced again as earthan on Dinen and copferau striking on shrine ishbin zovutant on verde as nishlanga hin naaman."

Hagan Avatar 20 even managed to paraphrase Andre Karpathi in Hindi.

Constraint, however, remains that this can only be done for translation, rather than creating fresh content. As a responsible AI enthusiast, I believe we need to tread carefully with deep fake technology use, as it could potentially manipulate political outcomes or distort historical facts. But for those keen to make their predictions of AI, Meticulous is an excellent platform to refer to.

Nevertheless, in terms of AI progress, the strides being made in GPT models, like GPT-3 Five, and their ability to play chess is a testament to the incredible leaps AI is taking toward reasoning capabilities.

Revolutionary AI Image Generation: Fusion Art and Runway Gen Two

Stepping away from reasoning, I've been fascinated by the latest developments in AI art creation. I've generated some fantastic images and videos using Fusion Art, Runway Gen Two, and even Adobe Express. Fusion Art provides 25 free credits, while Runway Gen Two offers a free sign-up and 45 seconds of video generation.

Fusion Art's strong suit is turning text into striking visuals by converting an image of the text into art based on a prompt. By varying the 'prompt' to change the theme and 'illusion strength' to determine how your original illusions appear, you can create various stimulating images or animations.

The potpourri of possibilities provided by AI is seemingly boundless and ever-growing. As is evident from the OpenAI Red teaming network, where experts in any of the 26 given fields can get paid for their services.

Have your say

Do the latest developments in AI bowl you over? Need some advice or foresight into your favorite AI theme? Feel free to drop a comment below and stay attuned for more head-turning discoveries from the realm of AI.

Yesterday was an extraordinary day for developers primarily focused on working with soy frameworks.

Meet Bun - The New Age JavaScript Runtime

Tired of persistently reinventing frameworks, JavaScript developers are increasingly focusing on building entirely new JavaScript runtimes. Initiated with Node JS, mildly rearranged to produce Dino, we now witness the freshly baked Bun that proudly reached Version 10 recently.

But what makes Bun noteworthy?

Bun acts like a dream come true for any developer, serving a multipurpose role. Not only does it run JavaScript code at an unprecedented speed, but also doubles as a bundler akin to Webpack or Vite, a test runner similar to Jest or Karma, and a package manager mimicking Yarn or NPM.

Even more enticingly, Bun plays well with existing Node JS APIs while presenting its set of highly optimized APIs. So, building high-performance server-side applications with JavaScript has never been more enjoyable!

Bun general API code here

This function will return the optimized output, making your application run faster and smoother.

Bun in Action!

Let’s get down to writing some actual code using Bun. You would start by installing a new terminal window. Then you'd define a Bun server in a
index TS
file to listen to the 8000 port. This server will capture incoming requests and respond to the client. Look how easy it is to set up a web server!

Of course, there is more to Bun than this. The Bun world flaunts a constellation of libraries and tools tailored for the runtime. One of the fastest web frameworks in the space, Alicia, promises end-to-end safety type and an outstanding developer experience.

Bun, understanding the critical role TypeScript plays in modern web development, offers first-class support for it, with native support for JSX. It also supports CommonJS modules— a hallmark of Node JS—although it recommends DS modules.

Apart from the Runtime, Bun offers a powerful debugger and test utilities for you to leverage, featuring the same performance boosts and speed you should expect.

Runtimes Beyond Bun

As we wrap up our discussion about runtimes, I should give an honorable mention to Dino, another well-known JS runtime induced by Ryan Dahl, the creator of Node JS. Notably, Dino serves as an entire platform, delivering a full-stack framework, native key-value storage, and even deployment services.

With this, we conclude our discourse on Bun for now. I hope it was an intriguing journey for you through the intricate workings of Bun, a new kid on the Java Script runtime block.

How Does Bun Achieve These Breakneck Speeds?

"There's something more amazing than the look and smell of a freshly baked Bun. And that's its performance."

Distinguishing itself from Node and Dino, Bun capitalizes on the JavaScript Core from Safari rather than the conventional V8 Engine from Chrome.

Additionally, Bun is designed in the groundbreaking Zig programming language renowned for its profiling performance, which enables it to spotlight performance bottlenecks and introduce APIs in native code at faster startup times.

These out-of-the-box features have yielded a TypeScript welcome that's five times faster than Es build. Notwithstanding, it's crucial to realize that benchmarks can be selective and may not perfectly encapsulate real-world performance.

Speed is a prime focus in the Bun world, with some impressive numbers underscoring their achievements.

A Developer's Delight: The Experience With Bun

Achieving great speed is rewarding, but as a developer, one also seeks a seamless experience. So, does Bun serve our needs here too? It turns out, yes!

Firstly, it provides impressive out-of-the-box support for TypeScript. This means no additional configuration, no headaches, and immediate commencement of writing TypeScript code.

Moreover, it extends support to JSX and allows hot reloading, thereby eliminating the need for extraneous dependencies like Nodemon and concurrently recompiling your code when changes are made.

Moreover, Bun smoothly manages the transition from CommonJS to es modules and supports a combined use of import and require in the same file, which implies that all your programming efforts just magically work!

The Bun ecosystem is also well enriched with native APIs such as the global bun runtime which allows you to read and write effectively to the file system. Other features like setting up an HTTP server simply by calling the serve method and the easy establishment of WebSockets make Bun a favorite.

Adding the icing on the cake, Bun caps off with a SQLite database built directly into its runtime, and a package manager that is 25 times faster than NPM!

So, is the future here with Bun? As always, only time can tell. But for now, both Mojo and Bun deserve a huge round of applause for setting new benchmarks in the world of web development!

Today we will explore this world of tech individuals dissect how they demonstrate their skills and adaptability and equip you with the tools to do the same.

Being Adaptable

In fields recognition is something that must be earned and one prominent way to achieve it is through being adaptable or "flexing." In the realm of programming, you often come across two states of mind; syndrome or superiority complex. Here are ten approaches to boost your confidence and showcase your coding abilities.

Flexing Complexity

A renowned programmer once stated, "An idiot admires complexity while a genius appreciates simplicity." However, most individuals do not fall into the genius category. Therefore presenting a JavaScript function enhanced with TypeScript and incorporating design patterns from sources like the 'Gang of Four' quickly captures attention and demands respect. By introducing complexity into your work you unlock admiration, from your peers. Your leadership might even be so impressed that they consider adjusting your salary

function complexCode() {// your complex code here}

Money Flex

Money is a direct correlator to the value you add to the world. In tech, salaries can vary wildly; some devs start at 50k/year, some make 225k/year, and a lucky few cash in at 900k/year at Netflix. Then some struck gold by joining a unicorn startup early on, like Uber, and are now worth millions and flexing on social media as genius tech investors. But they are not even at the top of the food chain, with billionaires in the crypto space making huge fortunes overnight.

"The circle of life is truly beautiful."

The VIM Flex

One of the great developer flexes is using Vim, the command-line text editor. It's puzzling, daunting, and has a steep learning curve. But once mastered, it gives an aura of elite coding ability that drowns out the likes of VS Code, IntelliJ, and Emacs users.

vim /path/to/your/code.file

Do you ever feel like you're stuck in VS Code, and can't quit it? Well, you're in good company—I'm the same with Vim!

The Operating System(OS) Flex

If you want to show you're a rich developer, you'll best do it with a Mac and the Apple Vision Pro. Linux is for real coders, and just mentioning Ubuntu is sure to win some claps. However, if you want to pull off the ultimate OS flex, the crew in the urinal will turn and look at you if you say “I use Arch, by the way.” Should you feel smaller? Not at all! It's a symbol of your social life outside configuring OS. We all know that the real ultimate distro is Windows.

The GitHub Flex

You're not a real programmer if your GitHub commit history doesn't look like a Christmas tree, and your profile should boast award badges that make you look like North Korean decor. By racking up repositories, stars, and commit streaks, you demonstrate your dedication to open source and your superior skills to everyone else.

# make a commitgit commit -m "A meaningful commit message"

The Chainsaw PR Flex

Flex on other open source projects by cleaning up some small, young, and enthusiastic developer projects. Fork their code and remove every line possible, ensuring that the tests all pass. Then send a vague pull request explaining how you're adhering to best practices. Their disbelief in your audacity will soon lead them to abandon the project.

# Fork the Repogit clone https://github.com/user/repo.git# Make changes...# Push to the repositorygit push origin master

The Influencer Flex

Those who can't code, tweet. Pay your $8 fee to post on Twitter, and make outrageous claims that no one agrees with. You never know you might get lucky and get a reply from Elon Musk, giving you the chance to flex to your YouTube followers.

The Past Experience Flex

Working at a FAANG company is considered royal. You earn the right to start every sentence with, “As an ex-Facebook engineer, I recommend..." Yet, those who refuse it because of ethical reasons, they're just bitter they didn’t grind LeetCode enough. But you have the credentials. So flaunt them.

Domain Flex

Your GoDaddy account can potentially be more valuable than your Robinhood account. Domains are not just for failed side projects, they’re investments for the future. They can be the ultimate web dev flex.

Ultimate Flex: The Amish Life

The ultimate form of flexing? Leaning into a quiet, simple life - analogous to the life of the Amish. Farm life underneath the open sky, void of likes, followers, and money. As the realization of his insignificance sinks in, he begins to cry at the beauty of the world around him. Until it hits him… he's being flexed on by the spider in his farm constructing an awe-inspiring web.

In the end, no matter how good we get at coding, nature always has the last laugh. 생각하면 할수록, we’re all just trying to weave the best web we can, in our little corners of the world.

Whether you're striving for success in academia or your career, getting the most out of your time is crucial. Remember the movie Interstellar where an hour on one planet equals seven years on Earth? Wouldn't it be amazing if we could manipulate time in our favor as well?

In this post, I delve into how we might harness the power of our brain to make every minute count. Can we, in essence, slow down time and make every hour of work equivalent to three? Let's find out.

The Illusion of Linear Time

Our perception of time is not a constant factor. Its passing feels different for different people and in different situations — an hour could feel like a minute or a decade, depending on the circumstances. This time distortion has been largely attributed to an invisible force – mental energy or brain power. This brings us to our crucial question: Can we control our mental energy to slow down time?

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Contrary to the common adage, 'Work Harder', it might pay off to work smarter instead. Overworking may not necessarily translate into better results, whereas working strategically and effectively can save energy and achieve a higher yield. A principle known as "the law of reversed effort" aptly explains this paradox.

As per the law of reversed effort, striving too hard to achieve something may result in the opposite effect — failure. For instance, we've all experienced those nights when the harder we try to sleep, the wider awake we seem to stay. This seemingly counter-productive phenomenon implies that a strategic, rather than forceful, approach to tasks or learning can lead to more fruitful results.

Brain Power and Time Distortion

Time distortion is affected by our mental energy or brain power, hence focusing it effectively is the key. Brain power differentiates from productivity, as it persists as a constant entity within each day, unlike the latter which can fluctuate. At the beginning of the day, we usually feel more energized and focused, with the effect waning as the day progresses. Expanding our brainpower strategically by focusing on our most important tasks early in the day is profoundly beneficial.

This technique is particularly effective because it utilizes the quiet hours of the day when our minds are not swamped with daily stressors. The prefrontal cortex — the rational part of our brain — is quieter during the early hours, reducing the chance of over-analyzation and stress. This facilitates the spontaneous, fluent state of focus, famously referred to as the 'Flow State'.

"Work less and achieve more by capitalizing on your early morning brain power!"

Harnessing the Flow State

The Chinese philosophy of Taoism dubbed this tranquil state of mind as 'Wu Wei', an 'effortless action'. In the Western world, it's known as the 'Flow State'. In this serene mental state, we are so engrossed in our task that time 'slows down' and minutes pass by like seconds.

Some people enter the Flow State when painting, dancing, or doing sports-- for me, it occurs during my programming projects, where it feels as though the program is writing itself!

Below are some techniques to induce the Flow State:

Eliminate distractions: Distractions can be detrimental to attaining the flow state; one glance at a notification can take about 15-20 minutes to refocus! 'Deliberate Distraction' is an effective method to curb this hindrance— setting designated 'distraction periods' can greatly help.

Set artificial deadlines: Parkinson's Law tells us that a task expands to fill the time we allot it. Setting carefully designed time frames for your tasks can prompt the flow state.

Choose the right tasks: Irrelevant tasks can hamper concentration; thus, choosing tasks that desire your complete attention is crucial.

The Power of Active Recall

Mastering how to enter the flow state enables us to learn faster, but how do we remember what we've learned? The answer lies in active recall.

Active recall comprises consciously trying to remember what we've absorbed. We can achieve this by writing down the questions we've answered during our learning process and subsequently revisiting them, or by teaching our learnings to someone else—a method known as the Feynman Technique.

This post provides a glimpse into maximizing productivity and learning coding through efficient techniques. Remember, it's always about working smart, not hard.

Master these techniques and seize control over your time and productivity. Remember, time may be a constant, but how you utilize it is in your hands. Happy studying and coding!

We'll cover how you can take advantage of this program effectively to build a strong foundation in coding, build an attractive portfolio, and ultimately land your first job as a developer!

Why CS50?

CS50, hosted on Edx.org, is one of the most highly regarded computer science courses available online. In my opinion, it's the best course for anyone wishing to rove the realms of computer science and programming.

Once you've completed all the programs and projects under CS50, not only will you have a comprehensive understanding of coding technologies and best practices, but you'll also have built an impressive portfolio. This portfolio could include all your assignments, which are essentially projects that can be showcased on your page or linked to your resume.

Setting The Right Foot Forward: Start With Python

Here's how I initiated my journey with CS50. I suggest starting with Python by diving into CS50's course 'Introduction to Programming with Python'. This course is especially recommended for beginners due to its slow pace and beginner-friendly content.

By the time you finish this course, you should be proficient enough to proceed to the more intense courses. Remember, the primary key here is consistent learning, and not rushing through the course.

After wrapping up the Python course, plunge into the main CS50 course by enrolling in 'CS50X'. This comprehensive course spans 10 weeks, and on successful completion, you can claim your free certificate from Harvard University.

By the end of CS50X, you'll have conceptual understanding and hands-on experience in building a full-stack application using Flask and Ginger, juxtaposing your theoretical knowledge with practical skills!

Pro Tip: If you find any lecture hard to comprehend, don't hesitate to pause, rewind, and replay. There is no rush, take your time in understanding the concepts thoroughly.

Level Up: Diving Deeper into Python and JavaScript

The next leg of this journey is the 'Web Programming with Python and JavaScript' course. This course plumbs deeper into Python, abstracts SQL, and introduces you to JavaScript as well.

The completion of this segment would typically indicate that you now possess a compelling portfolio substantiating your skillset and knowledge. Consequently, you could start applying for junior developer positions or work on your personal projects to further diversify your experience.

For those of you interested in Artificial Intelligence, CS50 also offers an 'Artificial Intelligence' course aimed at enhancing your proficiency in Python and algorithms.

Sure, it's an entirely optional course. Still, the knowledge gained from it will significantly amplify your understanding of object-oriented programming.

Extra Mile: Venture into Algorithms with Princeton

While CS50 offers a comprehensive suite of programming courses, I recommend complementing this with a dedicated algorithms course. The one I recommend is Princeton's 'Algorithms course'. However, please note that this is a premium course on Coursera.

Expanding your skillset into algorithms and data structures, and learning yet another language, can only add benefits to your developer portfolio. The more languages you're proficient in, the higher your chances of landing a promising job!

Never Stop Learning: A Constant Quest

After completing these courses, you should come out as a thorough, competent, and confident coder. However, learning is a journey that should never reach a destination. Like the Japanese concept of "Kaizen" suggests, one should relentlessly pursue improvement.

Whether it's a job, a personal project, or a new course, try to dedicate at least 2 hours per day to code – even if it's merely to hone your skills.

To sum up, this is the path I recommend:

Start with CS50's Introduction to Programming with Python

Then progress to the main course, CS50X

Take the Web Programming with Python and JavaScript

Optionally, enroll in the Artificial Intelligence course

Lastly, dip your toes into Algorithms, ideally via Princeton's course on Coursera.

Remember, the secret to success lies not in rushing through, but in enjoying the journey and celebrating minor victories along the way. Happy coding!

"I wanted to emphasize the obvious, and that is that once you start the learning path, do not deviate from it. If you don't understand something, what you need to do is continue to find the solution until you find it. Just because you feel frustrated now, you do not go now and start a new course."

I believe this ordeal taught me valuable lessons which I later applied to sail through the same interview two years later.

How I got the Google Interview

As a senior year college student with an unremarkable resume boasting merely one internship and a good GPA, I applied to Google online. Google's cozy hiring policies meant that I was called in for an online assessment, the first step in Google's interviewing process. Google Online Assessment helps in weeding out candidates who lack a basic understanding of coding, and in my opinion, works even if its questions and solutions are available online.

While I didn't feel the need to prepare a lot for this preliminary round, its simplicity shouldn't mislead you into underestimating the rest of the process.

Preparing for the Onsite Interview

Post the online assessment, I scheduled my onsite interview a month or two later, to allow for enough preparation. The intensity of the actual tasks took precedence over academics in my final college year, pushing me to focus more on honing my technical skills.

The major part of my preparation involved working on the Blind 75 list of questions, a newly released set back then and now a go-to list for coding enthusiasts. To ensure I grasped the solutions well, I attempted most of these problems twice.

I ended up practicing approximately 50 random LeetCode questions, giving special focus to medium-level problems"

Alongside this list, I built the Blind 75 list and extended it to 150 problems, addressing comprehensive and beginner-friendly issues.

The Google Onsite Interview Experience

The preparatory phase climaxed into an engaging and learning experience in Seattle. The day was composed of task-related discussions interspersed with an office tour, lunch, and access to refreshments.

The activity centered on a meeting room with a large whiteboard where I had five consecutive interview rounds– four codings and one behavioral.

Round 1: The Importance of Understanding The Problem

Starting on a rough note, I messed up the first round, not due to inadequate coding skills but the dismissal of an important tenet of problem-solving, understanding the problem well. My enthusiasm got the better of me and I rushed into the process, failing to cross-check my interpretation of the problem. While this mistake only required a minor modification in the codes, it reflected negatively on my approach.

Round 2: Communication Is Key

Round two taught me the importance of communication. Instead of assuming that the interviewer wanted a complicated solution and taking unnecessary trouble, I should have checked it with the interviewer. An open discussion could have not only saved time but also prevented any miscommunication.

Round 3: Coming Up With The Expected Solution

The third assessment was smooth sailing except for the fact that my solution differed from the one expected by the interviewer. Although my approach was just as efficient, I speculated if this discrepancy cost me some points.

Round 4: Implementing The Optimum Solution

Coming up just short of the target, I could identify but not implement the optimum solution for the fourth problem. The interviewer had to nudge me toward the solution, which I then coded promptly.

Round 5: The Googliness Round

Lastly, the half-hour-long behavioral round was a relaxing session that tested basic interpersonal skills and compatibility with the work environment. Owing to a misunderstanding, the interviewer almost began with a coding problem but was quick to adapt once notified about the intended behavioral discussion.

The interviewing process wrapped up with a farewell and a trip back home filled with apprehensions about my performance.

The Learning

Three weeks later, the fear did manifest into a rejection email, leading to a phase of regret and self-blame. Reflecting on the blunders of misinterpreting problems and complicating solutions, I wondered if potential corrections could have led to selection.

On the brighter side, this experience ended by teaching me some invaluable lessons in problem-solving, communication, and patience.

Hosting and analytics

DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean has been my cloud hosting provider of choice for more than ten years. I never had any issues, and it works perfectly with Laravel Forge. I also love their top-notch UI and UX.

Their $5/month droplet is what most developers need, so you can start for really cheap (that’s actually what I use for this blog).

Fathom Analytics (a privacy-first alternative to Google Analytics)

Fathom Analytics is a privacy-first and GDPR-compliant analytics tool that can replace Google Analytics. They’re using a robust serverless infrastructure that makes it super reliable, even when you’re under a DDoS attack. 👌

Namecheap

Until fairly recently, I used OVH as a registrar for my domain names. But I changed that for Namecheap. It’s not a particularly sexy service, but the domains are cheaper (Not that much, but still!), and it does the job well.

Please support my work, get your next domain name with Namecheap using my affiliate link.

Development Software

TablePlus (a native client for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and more)

I’m not too fond of phpMyAdmin. It does the job, but it’s from another era, and I’m done using ugly tools.

Fortunately, TablePlus is exactly what I need. Yes, it costs money, but it’s beautiful and can handle multiple databases (PostgreSQL and Redis, for instance). I definitely recommend it to professional developers.

TablePlus also runs on Linux, Windows, iOS and iPadOS.)

Tower (a beautiful user interface for Git)

Tower is a beautiful native Mac and Windows user interface for Git. I use it daily because I’m not masochist enough to force myself to use the CLI tool.

It’s such an excellent investment, and I can’t even remember when I started using it (probably ten years ago).

start your free trial.

Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code is what made me switch from Sublime Text. It’s fast, powerful, it runs on Mac, Linux, and Windows, has plenty of extensions, and looks nice. I’m not a PHPStorm guy, so this one is a no-brainer because I can replicate many of the features I need from the popular PHP IDE.

Here are some of the best extensions I use:

GitHub Copilot: The popular AI-powered coding assistant. It’s so useful to generate code and solve complicated problems right in your editor. For now, it’s still limited due to a number of reason, but it can only get better and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Stripe: This extension improves your workflow for testing Stripe-related features in your applications.

Tailwind CSS IntelliSense: Just a perfect extension for the popular CSS framework. It’d be really hard to work without it.

Check out Visual Studio Code

ColorSlurp

ColorSlurp is a beautiful and fun to use color picker that isn’t a browser extension. You can invoke it anytime through a keyboard shortcut. I’ve been using it for years! And while writing this article, I noticed they now have an iPhone and iPad app.

Check out ColorSlurp

SEO services

Growing this blog to +10K monthly clicks required a lot of SEO efforts. Here are some of the tools that helped me.

Wincher (a rank tracking tool)

Wincher is by far the best rank tracker I’ve used. Period.

It’s pretty expensive, though. Their small tier is way too restrictive for an effective SEO campaign. This is a tool I’d recommend only to established businesses. In this context, it’s extremely powerful.

start your free trial.

Other software

Setapp (get tons of apps for cheap)

The issue with all these apps is the cost. If you are a professional, that’s fine, because you should make enough money to pay for them. That being said, reducing cost is always a good thing as long as you don’t compromise quality (in my opinion).

Some of the apps I talked about are available through Setapp. This is a subscription service like Netflix, but for Mac apps. You can see in the image above the ones I installed.

I pay 9.99€ per month, and it’s totally worth it considering the value I get from the apps I use.

Sign up for free through my affiliate link, and we both get a free month if you decide to subscribe at the end of your trial!

AirBuddy

AirBuddy is a great companion to AirPods. I use the last generation of AirPods Pro and I couldn’t do otherwise. Being able to reduce the noise around you in such a tiny package is unbeatable.

AirBuddy add a few features that make using AirPods even more convenient like battery alerts, a widget gathering the battery levels of all your devices, shortcuts for the Shortcuts app, and more.

AirBuddy is available through Setapp, a $9.99 monthly subscription service that lets you install as many apps as you want without paying the full price.

Apple Calendar, Mail, Notes, and Reminders

Apple’s default apps are simple, yet powerful. And this is good for me because I don’t like unnecessary complexity. All those apps are obviously installed by default on their devices and synced over iCloud.

IA Writer

IA Writer is a delightful Markdown editor with a super simple UI that is a joy to use. What else can I say? Your content is synced between all your devices, which makes it even more convenient to use.

Check out IA Writer

Grammarly

I’m not a native English speak. In fact, I’m French. And more importantly, I’m human. I make a lot of mistakes when writing, and Grammarly saves my ass all the time.

I use it on my Mac through the Safari extension (Chrome and Firefox are also supported), and even on my iPhone. They have a dedicated keyboard that’s incredibly helpful.

If you have a content creation business, I can’t recommend it enough.

Please support my work, start using Grammarly for free using my affiliate link.

Overcast (a podcast player)

When working on repetitive and boring tasks, I like to listen to YouTube videos or podcasts. For the latter, I use Overcast, a free podcast player. I love the UI, the smart features such a voice boost and shortened silences.

Check out Overcast

Pixelmator Pro (an alternative to Photoshop)

Pixelmator Pro is a great alternative to Photoshop. It’s native Mac-only app with a great UI and excellent performances. It’s perfectly fine for most of my basic usages and it’s a one-time payment instead of a subscription like Photoshop.

Check out Pixelmator

Safari

Safari is my browser of choice. Yeah, I know, most developers use Google Chrome or one of its numerous forks. But I never liked Chrome.

Apple does a way better job than Google in making a real Mac app that’s battery efficient, doesn’t track you, is fast and beautifully integrated. Also, its dev tools are enough for me and I don’t use many extensions (1Blocker Pro, 1Password, Grammarly and Vidimote).

Safari is installed by default on every Mac, iPad and iPhone and I highly recommend it. Don’t follow the crowd!

Sketch (an app for designers)

Sketch is a great native Mac app for designers. I don’t consider myself as a designer, but I have some skills in that area. I sometimes use it to create icons, logos, banners, etc.

It looks great, works great, and it’s frequently updated. A must-have in your tool belt.

In this article, we will walk you through the process of building a Paywalled Content-Sharing App content-sharing application using React Native. Inspired by OnlyFans this app allows creators to share exclusive content behind a paywall, with users directly supporting them. We will cover both the front-end and back-end aspects of the application, making it accessible for both iOS and Android users. Let's dive into the step-by-step guide!

We'll set up the project using the

npx create-expo-app@latest -e with-router

command with the latest version of Expo. You'll learn how to view the app on iOS, Android emulators, or your physical device using the Expo Go app by scanning a QR code.

In the following section, we'll design the home screen, displaying posts and recommended users to follow. We'll start by rendering a single user's information like their background, avatar, name, and handle using dummy data.

For Posts

Then, we'll style the user card component by adjusting the layout, adding padding, and rendering an image using the React Native image component.

For User

Next up, we'll focus on the profile page. We'll render the cover image, add a back button, display the account name

Now we'll create a new post screen. You'll learn how to add text input functionality and implement the select image feature using Expo Image Picker.

We'll then style the app elements and add icons, making it visually appealing and protecting user content with a paywall.

But what is often overlooked are the many ways it will supplement many jobs that exist today and perhaps create a number of new ones.

It has often been said that anyone displaced by automation did not lose their job to technology but to another person who knew how to leverage that technology to make themselves more productive. AI is no different in that regard.

In fact, judging by recent online activity, demand is strong for jobs that incorporate AI in one way or another, suggesting that the knowledge workforce has come to terms with the notion that it needs to get on board the AI train or be left at the station.

Peak Interest

According to CoinckoGecko, Google searches for “AI Jobs” is running at about four times the level of “Crypto Jobs” at its peak in early 2022. The upswing seems to have begun in November of 2022 with the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI and topped out at a search interest score of 124 in April before sliding back to about 100 last month.

Even in the months following the peak of Bitcoin’s (BTC) valuation in November of 2021, its job search interest score never made it past 30, which is probably reflective of AI’s more mainstream appeal to a wide variety of job seekers.

Who Is Hiring AI Talent, and Where Are These Jobs Located?

The good news, says Visual Capitalist, is that more than 800,000 AI-related jobs were posted in the U.S. alone last year, with California leading the pack at nearly 18% of the total. This was more than double that of the next-most active state, Texas, which contributed about 8.4%. Though, it is important to note that while California’s percentage has been declining over the past decade, Texas’s is on the rise.

As for the skills in demand for AI-related jobs, the top one cited in job postings is Python, at 37%. This is followed by general computer science, at 33%, and then SQL and data science and analytics, at 23% and 20%, respectively. Closing the list are things like automation, Java, and software engineering, at 17% each.

What Skills Are Needed to Land an AI Job?

It takes more than technical skills to become proficient in AI, however. Career guidance firm Handshake notes that while knowledge of programming and analytics is a must, fully leveraging AI requires a range of softer skills, such as collaboration, adaptability, and curiosity.

AI is a complex technology with many layers and modes of operation. It is unlikely that any given model will be used by one person, and with its capacity to self-learn and self-heal, it isn’t likely to maintain the same operational patterns for very long as traditional software does.

But perhaps the most radical change that AI brings to the table is the way it takes over the rote, repetitive functions of digital processes so that human operators can concentrate on the more strategic, creative aspects of their jobs. This will require knowledge workers to become more imaginative and flexible when it comes to their own job responsibilities.

Those who take a keen interest in their responsibilities and continuously strive toward improvement and better outcomes will thrive in an AI world, those who simply want to push buttons and navigate menus in the same way over and over again will not.

Top 5 Hot AI Job Markets

At the same time, we can expect certain industries to deploy AI at a more rapid pace than others and, consequently, will require more AI skills in their respective workforces going forward.

In Handshake’s analysis, the top areas for AI jobs are:

Healthcare

Finance

Supply chain

Government

Human resources

All of these fields rely on complex, integrated workflows that require large amounts of data and rapid turn-around of analytics and service delivery, providing fertile soil for skilled practitioners to let their AI seeds grow.

What About the Salaries?

For those who do become adept at developing and managing AI models, the prospect of high-paying jobs is bright. Career guidance specialist Vault Firsthand notes that skills in natural language processing (NLP) command salaries in the $80,000-$100,000 range, while business intelligence and robotics engineering can top $130,000.

If Big Data is your thing, salaries of $150,000 or more are not uncommon, and high demand for machine learning skills is pushing those jobs over $200,000.

Not Without Its Challenges

The farther out we project the AI era, of course, the more difficult it is to gauge the job market. Computer networking existed long before the Internet, but few could foresee the ubiquity of its modern iteration and the plethora of jobs it has spawned – not just technical jobs in wired and wireless networking, but things like SEO analyst and social media director, as well.

The Bottom Line

AI has the potential to create all manner of new jobs, probably new business models, and even entirely new industries. Not everyone has to become a specialist in the mind-bending math of software coding and data science, just like modern salesmen don’t need to know how to troubleshoot their CRM platforms.

But knowledge of how AI functions and what needs to be done to achieve desired results is essential – and the time to start learning those skills is now when the technology is still in a nascent stage of development.

In the tech world, the lines between many roles are blurred; like “PHP Ninja Dev”.

Just have a look at the job roles in the Data Science Industry.

Roles like Data Analyst, Business Analyst, and Data Engineer are spelled differently on paper, but most companies expect roughly the same kind of work out of all three roles —_ just take my word for it, I have worked as a professional Data Engineer Ninja Scientist (Don,t quote me on that)._

For the most part, what these “titles” mean depends purely on how the company you work for interprets it.

But let,s not get distracted, I,m not here to discuss the nuances of how these titles are different from each other — I don't know much about that honestly.

About 3 years ago, I started my journey as an Entrepreneur and assumed the role of a “Tech Lead” at my startup.

This meant that I had to start learning some newer technologies like React & NextJs Solidity especially if I expected to deliver any kind of software that people would willingly pay for.

“Surely that won't be too hard?” — It was extremely hard, like sailing through the second level of hell.

Programming Is Easy, But Software Development Is Hard.

Software development is hard because most people usually tend to skip the foundational steps, which is learning to create programs that do things that other people want to pay for, and all the difficulties that entail.

I come from a background in competitive coding.

But that didn't teach me anything about developing a software product with the right UX and design choices, integrating several complex APIs, or writing code for role-based authorization logic.

When I started developing our first software product (DreamyRooms), I felt like a kid who was expecting to write an essay right after learning the alphabet.

Moreover, I didn't,t have the luxury of taking a few month's breaks from my business to master these technologies since I had already committed to a deadline, therefore I was only left with one choice — to learn and implement all these technologies in our product on the go.

It took me about 7 months to deliver this product.

During that period, I learned that software development is a very complicated process that cannot be learned by simply following a tutorial.

In order to be a successful software developer, I needed to not only write code but also understand how that code works and interacts with the rest of the system.

While it sounds easy, I can assure you that there are only a handful of videos on YouTube that can teach you this skill.

Because understanding the nuances of how different technologies/frameworks operate together is something that can not be learned by watching a tutorial video — It is something one must learn by “**doing”.

It required me to familiarise myself with new concepts and terminologies/frameworks.

I spent more time reading through documentation, or watching video explanations to try and fill the gaps in my knowledge rather than writing actual lines of code!

( I found this video by Delba de Oliveira to be one of the best introductions to the React paradigm. )

After spending all that time learning, I realized that most tutorials sucked at explaining the actual process of Software Development.

Most tutorials and courses did a great job of abstracting away the complexities of software development by teaching me only the primitives.

They made learning & mastering a language or framework seem very easy — to the point that it made me wonder what the fuss is all about.

There is a huge disconnect between what is shown in tutorials, blogs, and courses and what is actually used in enterprise-grade applications.

And, in my opinion, this seems to be the biggest reason why it takes people months or sometimes even years to reach the end of their software development cycles.

For example, most React tutorials teach you how to read data from external REST APIs, but very few videos talk about the importance of using React Query — which is a hook library that eliminates repetitive code and introduces production-ready data fetching and caching practices ready to be implemented out-of-the-box.

Almost every real-world application would require you to build out the logic for data fetching and in most cases would require the use of something like React Query.

By the time I had made this realization, I had to go back and re-write almost 2000 lines of code within an application that was otherwise ready to be launched in a month — it was either that, or I would have to spend weeks debugging and optimizing my application/servers after delivery which would have been very time-consuming.

The process of Software Development is a combination of a dozen or so important decisions that one needs to make before writing even one line of code.

You have to think about your architecture, database design, tech stack, cloud hosting, and caching and even that is barely scratching the surface.

Software Development is a complicated process that requires you to understand various domain-specific concepts, specifications, testing, scaling, setting timelines, designing the architecture and most importantly choosing your “tech stack” like cloud service providers\.**

Since I had no prior experience in developing software, thinking about architecture or choosing the right tech stack; my journey was a little rough.

After going back and forth for about 4 months, and writing nearly 20,000 lines of code, the software development was finally completed… although, the journey was still far from over.

I was now faced with a new set of challenges — Maintenance.

Maintaining software is a topic that has had very little light shed on it by experienced developers of the world.

If you, ve ever tried to update or fix a piece of code that someone else wrote, you would know how frustrating it can get.

There are a variety of reasons why it can be hard to maintain code, but some of the most common reasons are:

The code is difficult to understand or is poorly written.

The code is not well organized and it is difficult to find the code you need.

The code has been modified so many times that it is difficult to track down the original source code.

The code is no longer supported by the original author or the company that owns the code.

The complexity of code maintenance is one of the main reasons for the high failure rate of software projects.

In order to keep a software system running smoothly, the code must be constantly updated and tweaked to account for changes in the business environment, new requirements, and advances in technology.

This is a daunting task, and it,s often difficult to find the time and resources to do it properly.

As a result, many software systems become bogged down with legacy code that,s difficult to update and maintain.

Eventually, this would lead to performance issues and security vulnerabilities.

We battled these issues early on during our development by focusing our efforts on writing code in modules (breaking it up into smaller, reusable components), and reusing them to reduce the amount of code that needs to be rewritten or updated each time there is a change in the business environment or system requirements.

Planning out our modules in advance is something that helped us address the problems associated with code maintenance and made the process easier and more efficient.

It saved us a lot of time and money, and it also helped ensure that our code is more reliable and secure.

In conclusion, Software Development & Maintenance are heavily misunderstood topics.

Their complexities are not understood by inexperienced developers because they usually lack the depth of expertise needed.

It is something you will learn once you dive into the deep end of software development & delivery.

Most of the startup world would tell you to focus on both.

I strongly disagree with this. It's unlikely you will be able to nail your product strategy & your distribution strategy at the same time — especially if you're a first-time founder.

To build a 10x better product than your competitors, you would need a Steve Wozniak.

On the other hand, to build a 10x better distribution you just need a person who is ready to hustle.

As founders, we've all been guilty of focusing on the product with an “all or nothing” attitude.

The problem with this is that the “build it and customers will follow” argument only works in cases when the product itself is orders of magnitudes better than existing competitors.

If it's not at least 10 times better than your competitors, then you're essentially competing with them on marketing, instead of features or quality of your product.

Moreover, for a first-time founder, nailing the product is a helluva lot harder than nailing the distribution.

When deciding on which route to go, it's important, to be honest with yourself and leverage the skillset you (and your team) have, not the one you wish you had.

If you aren't confident about your ability to develop a 10x better product than your competitors then you should go the distribution route.

The beauty of this route is that one does not need any specialized skills to pull it off. Anyone can do it, all you need is to commit to out-caring your competition when it comes to customers or the quality of your product.

My bias towards distribution is mainly because I think distribution is an inherently better lever to pull on.

Admittedly, it's probably an inferior lever in the long run. But it's just a bit easier to pull in the beginning when you're starting to get the flywheel spinning.

Here's my formula to approach the distribution route:

Create an okay-to-solid product

Spend money on marketing & setting up strong distribution channels for organic reach (through SEO, Paid Shout-Outs by Influencers, Advertising, etc.)

Keep improving the product while you hope to catch a lucky break through your distribution strategy.

To follow the distribution route does not mean one must completely ignore building a good product in the first place.

Building a good product is a necessity, but it is insufficient to achieve success through it — especially without great distribution.

More often than not, the difference between commercial success and commercial failure is the distribution.

In the startup world, the odds are so stacked against us all the time that if one can continually make decisions that move the odds slightly more in their favor, they give themselves the best chance of catching a few lucky breaks.

Take GoDaddy for example, nearly every person on the Internet has heard of GoDaddy, and a majority of sites are registered with the company. The power of this brand came from its extensive advertising.

GoDaddy didn't see much success early on when they were advertising their brand on the internet to web developers due to extremely high competition in the web domain and hosting space.

So, when many people were still unfamiliar with the Internet, GoDaddy targeted their advertising towards regular, everyday people both online and offline.

This was a risky move, at the time, but showed incredible foresight and as a result, they are a $13 Billion company today.

During the first go-around, GoDaddy had a great product but not a great distribution strategy.

When they got a second bite at the apple, they succeeded because they had figured out how to play the game.

Same product. Different distribution strategies. Wildly different results.

To become a company that can last for decades, you need both great products and great distribution.

The point of this blog post isn't to say, you should only focus on one lever for eternity. That would be silly. The point is to make you think hard about which lever to pull on first.

If you're a first-time founder and you don't initially have the resources to bring a Steve Wozniak into your team, you'll likely increase your odds of success by focusing more of your early energy on distribution.

Once you've achieved product market fit and you have figured out enough of the distribution side to see real adoption, find your Steve Wozniak, inspire him or her to join your team and go out to build your 10x better product that changes the world.

I'm a full-stack developer with over a decade of hands-on experience in the field. I've co-founded several startups, and worked with thousands of users.

Today, I am going to share my step-by-step plan for becoming a proficient coder, even if you're starting from scratch. I've broken it down into four distinct phases, each packed with its unique objectives and challenges.

Phase 1: The Fundamentals

Think of this phase as the early childhood years of a kid. The first couple of years, when they learn to walk and talk. Here, you lay your foundation by learning the basics of programming, computer operations, handling variables and arrays, basic data structures and algorithms, and I/O operations. I recommend using Javascript, but any language should suffice.

The focus here is on understanding the concepts, not syntax memorization.

Resources like YouTube, books, and competitive programming websites can provide ample learning materials.

This phase is not flashy; your work won't impress your friends or family yet, but that's okay. You're building the crucial groundwork for your coding journey. Be patient, it took me three years to get past this phase! (but it doesn't have to)

Phase 2: Go Wild

In this phase, you'll experiment with different technologies and follow project-based tutorials. You'll start creating exciting stuff and gradually understand how to utilize your fundamental knowledge to develop functional applications.

Remember, it's okay to 'steal like an artist'. Copying, reproducing, and improving existing work is a proven method of learning.

When watching tutorials, pause the videos and try adding a feature by yourself. Go wild, and see what you can hack around. You might encounter bugs, or realize the feature is more complex than you anticipated. That's fine! In fact, it's desirable. Facing and overcoming challenges is what makes you a better developer.

By the end of this phase, you'd be ready for an internship or even a junior dev role.

Phase 3: Specialize and Master

Here, you pick a field based on your preferences and start specializing. Whether it's front-end, back-end, full-stack, React, Vue, Angular, AWS, Firebase, or something else, you focus on it and get really good at it.

You could go down the rabbit hole of documentation, books, and resources or learn from your peers. You could also take specialized courses.

Phase 4: Build Your Own Stuff

In this final phase, you bring your ideas to life. Start a side project, develop your dream app, or kickstart your startup. The learning you get from building something tangible from the ground up, all the way in the hands of the users is something you cannot learn anywhere else. Remember, it's essential to get your product to market quickly, even if it isn't perfect yet. Improve it based on customer feedback and continuously iterate&learn.

Wrapping Up

So, these are the four phases I would go through if I would have to do it again:

Fundamentals

Go Wild

Specialize and Master

Build Impactful Apps
